Overview

The Global Development And Environment Institute (GDAE) is a research institute at Tufts University dedicated to promoting a better understanding of how societies can pursue their economic and community goals in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner. GDAE pursues its mission through original research, policy work, publication projects, curriculum development, conferences and other activities.

While many people in the North flee to the Caribbean to escape the cold of winter, they may not realize they are engaging in international trade. This paper examines the role played by trade and liberalization in tourism services in fostering or constraining sustainable development. In short, it explores the question: what are the opportunities and barriers to achieving sustainable development through trade in tourism-services?
